My name is Paul Massengill. As the author of this book, I suspect that you have picked it up for the same reason I wanted to write it: you know there’s more to you than meets the eye. Regardless of the specifics of your situation, if you’re curious about the way your mind works and wonder if it could, perhaps, explain some things about your current lot in life, this book is for you.

As I matured physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, I began to look outside of myself, and learned that people process information and thoughts in different ways. Still I found repeating patterns of self-destruction in all these different kinds of people. I asked myself why it is that we don’t see all the truths around us. Why do we live on half-truths, with limited and often erroneous beliefs about our family, professional and social worlds and our relationship to these? Why is it so hard to see the truth for what it is?

Through extensive psychological study, I’ve devised Discover IT, a step-by-step program with the goal of helping you achieve a better understanding of yourself, in order to better yourself and your future. If you want it, you can reach your full potential and secure a fulfilling future for yourself. You just need to be willing to learn to work and to change.


 

So What Exactly is IT

Glad you asked. To get technical IT stands for Internal Thoughts. In the psychology world, these thoughts reside in what is commonly referred to as the subconscious mind, which you can think of as a mental filing cabinet that stores all the little perceptual data bits that make up your unique interpretation of reality. Though life would be a lot easier if this wasn’t true. The information in the subconscious is not readily accessible by its partner-in-crime, the conscious mind. Your conscious is a much more interactive filing cabinet, one which stores all your thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and any other aspects of mental life that are present in awareness. In other words, what goes on in your conscious mind should be no secret to you, as these are mental experiences you process every day. But the subconscious mind, the keeper of those far more elusive Internal Thoughts (IT), is much more difficult to get to know, and yet it is the driving force for much of our behavior. Unfair? Maybe. Confusing? Probably. But let’s think of this for a moment, less scientifically and more practically, by asking the question, “How does my subconscious mind affect me?” Think of it like this:

At birth, your subconscious mind is like a blank canvas. Brush strokes are added with each new life experience and eventually enough information is gathered to paint the picture of reality that we call truth. But this “truth” is relative to your individual perception of reality, and because your perception may be distorted by past-programmed conditioning (the environment you grew up in and the experiences you were subjected to as a result of that), it’s not a reliable interpretation to base your truth on. If you stand your truth up next to an entirely objective view of reality, you might find that you have not recorded the real truth at all, that your perception not just of the external world, but of your own individual abilities and potential is skewed1. This becomes important once you begin to assume attituded and opinions about others and perhaps most importantly, yourself. Good or bad, you’re stuck with your perception of yourself until you consciously decide to change it. But how can you change your attitude if the reason for its being is locked away in your subconscious? How can you better yourself and your life if you can’t figure out what’s wrong or how you got to this point?

Good news: the subconscious mind is not unknowable. With this book as your guide, you can delve into your own subconscious and learn for yourself who you are, what makes you tick, how you got to where you are today, and how you can get to where you want to be. Where’s the distortion in your subconscious? How are you holding yourself back? How can you change into something better? By learning more about the subconscious and your own unique mental processing techniques, you can find the answers. Through this book you can Discover IT.
